With generous grant funding from UC Berkeley, Brainstorm is creating an aging and the brain game collection for use at a local nursing home. Nursing home residents will have access to cognitive stimulating games that model real world experiences such as going grocery shopping. Brainstorm's goal of beginning a "real world" game collection was inspired by the Netherlands advanced dementia care facility, Hogeweyk, which promotes maintaining normality and autonomy in residents' daily lives.
Though nursing homes in the US often do not have the space and resources to completely simulate "normal" life for residents, Brainstorm believes that efforts to provide stimulating activities for residents, such as grocery shopping games, are worthwhile in addressing the cognitive decline associated with advanced age.
Stay tuned for more information on our elderly game collection as well as future articles on Alzheimer's disease and other degenerative brain disorders.
